Budget Friendly Fun: College
As a college student, I know what it’s like to be the stereotypical “broke college student”. When you’re paying an arm and leg for books, tuition, and all the necessities that come with living on your own, it’s hard to find the extra money for “fun”. The only thing that makes you feel better about it is knowing everyone is in the same boat as you; so you have the “we’re all in this together” mentality.
With that being said, here is my list of fun and affordable things to do in your new college town:
1. Explore Nature!
This is one of my favorite things to do to kill time and the best part about it is-it’s free! I go to school in Cape Girardeau, there are tons of hiking trails, parks, and even the river to hang out at with friends. This is also a good way to take a break from studying and get some fresh air! Check out the beauty your town has to offer!
2. Discounted Movie Tickets.
On Tuesdays we can catch a movie for $5 at the nearest theater. This is a popular thing to do and it seems like the whole school is at the theater on Tuesdays. Check with your local theater to see if they have regular student discount deals.
3. Local Parades/ Festivals.
Every town has their own special quirks about them. See when the local parades or festivals are and go - even if it sounds unappealing or boring, because you have an opportunity to explore something new. My college town is so different from my hometown, so it was an adventure my first year going to the annual parades and festivals that are regular to the area.
4. Campus Events
One of the best ways to get involved is to do things will your fellow students on campus. Many times, campuses have events set up in the school year that are free to its students. Whether it’s a late night breakfast during finals week, an ice cream social on move in night, or a swim party at the rec- try to make as many as you can. This can also help you branch out and meet new people around campus!
5. Join an Intermural League.
Whether you’re a person who’s been an athlete since they could walk or you’ve never kicked a ball before, intermurals will be good for you. They’re a fun way to stay active and meet people with similar interests. Now’s the time in your life to get out and try new things, so why not pick up a new sport!
6. Check Out The Unique Shops!
Another budget friendly thing to do is wander through the small boutiques and shops around town! It’s a fun thing to do on a Saturday afternoon with friends, and maybe you can even catch some good deals!
7. Relax At Your Local Coffee House/Café!
This is one of my favorites. Find a cute, hip, local coffee house where you can grab a latte on a cold day and study for exams. It’s relaxing, affordable, and helps you concentrate on your studies outside of your dorm (at least for me it did). Also, check out the small diners/café’s, because small dining tends to have some of the most delicious food.
