4 Financial Resolutions to Make in 2018
The New Year is the perfect time to get a grip on your finances and set up to be financially stress-free. Whether you’re completely comfortable with your finances or they’re in need of a little love, here are four New Year resolutions that will help kick start your financial freedom for 2018:
Step Up Your Savings Game
It doesn’t matter if you’re an avid saver or a super spender, it never hurts to put more in the bank. Look at your budget to see where you can pull a little extra money for savings. It might be hard to cut back the first couple of months, but by the end of this year it will be worth it.
Think about it - even if you save just an extra $20 per week, that’s over a thousand dollars by the end of the year (on top of whatever else you’re saving).
Prioritize Your Debts
Debt can be stress inducing. It might be near impossible to pay off your debts in the New Year, but getting a control of them can help reduce stress and give you an outlook on where you stand financially.
Pro Tip: Start by paying those debts with the highest interest rates – such as a credit card. Paying down this way will save you money in the future
Collect Your Change (for real this time)
Everyone always says that they’re going to put their change into a piggy bank, but that hardly happens due to the inconvenience of it. Keep a jar in your car and your house to make sure you always have a place to put it! You can even have fun with it and have a craft night to make your new containers!
Pro Tip: The Credit Union has coin counters at many of the locations. After collecting your change for the year, bring in your containers to deposit it into your savings account. You’ll be surprised at how much “pocket change” can add up!
Make Money Doing What You Love
This should not only be a financial resolution, but also a lifestyle. Doing what you love creates happiness, which should be a top priority. Try to find ways to make some extra money by doing something you’re passionate about. For example, making jewelry to sell if you’re feeling creative or walking dogs if you’re an animal lover. There are so many wonderful opportunities to get paid for your hobbies; you just have to look for them!
