7 Things to Do on Memorial Day Weekend

Memorial Day weekend is usually spent with loved ones, taking a step back to honor those who served in the US military and enjoy time together.

And while it is typically a holiday when many people travel there are still lots of great things to do from the comfort of your own backyard and neighborhood.

1. Have a Cook Off Competition At Home

Cooking at home over a holiday weekend doesn’t have to be the “same old, same old” food.

If you have more than one chef who likes to take a turn at the grill, check out some new recipes to try over the weekend or look at new ways to approach some family favorites. After you have created your masterpieces, let the rest of the family be the judge as to the true “Grill Master”.

If your family loves friendly competition: Throw a trophy and one year of bragging rights before the next Cook Off to “raise the steaks”.

2. Take the Road Trip

Driving will (almost) always be more affordable than flying—so take the road trip!  Depending on your destination, map the route and plan time to stop at any interesting or historical stops along the way to further enrich your time.

3. Create a Photo Scavenger Hunt

This is one of my personal favorites, because you can make a photo scavenger hunt as big or small to fit your needs. You can use the camera on your phone—or feel free to use a professional camera to up those photography skills while you’re at it!

You can have teams to make it a friendly competition and decide whether you want to take photos of specific locations (in your house or neighborhood), objects, or people. Any way you plan it, a photo scavenger hunt gets your creativity flowing.

You can also create a socially distanced photo scavenger hunt if you want to include family and/or friends you haven’t seen in a while.

4. Shop Local

Buying local is a great way to get the most out of your dollar.  Some economic benefits of shopping for locally grown food and goods:

·  It keeps money in the community

·  Local business people profit

·  It creates jobs

·  Shopping local can keep taxes down

5. Volunteer

If you’re searching for something new to try while on an extended holiday vacation, consider volunteering.  Many nonprofit organizations appreciate extra hands during the holiday season and it can be a fun way to give back to your community (or the one you’re visiting!).

Find a nonprofit near you to get started.

6. Enjoy Local Parks or Walking Trails

While the weather is warming up for summer., check out some of your local parks and walking trails. It promotes good health habits and gets you seeing parts of your neighborhood that you may not have known existed.

Already a trail expert in your neck of the woods? See how far you feel comfortable venturing to the next city or state and make it a weekend plan to get to as many as you can.

7. Spend the Holiday Hosting a Garage Sale

Seize the opportunity of a long weekend by decluttering the house with a garage sale.  Go through those fall and winter clothes or items you may not want for this year. (Hey, some people relax by cleaning!)

Use the cash from your garage sale to cushion your emergency savings account.
