I’ll admit it: I am terrible at decorating for the holidays. While others scour Pinterest boards in search of the perfect rustic centerpiece, you will find me hauling out the one and only decoration I own: a dusty but fantastic retro ceramic tree (with a missing star) that my Great Aunt Shirley made in the 1950s. It’s not that I dislike decorating, but with so many options it’s easy to get overwhelmed and pretend to be a Grinch.

That’s why I am taking a much different approach this year. I have asked friends, family and coworkers for some of their easiest, cost-sensitive holiday decoration projects that will make any space look pretty…without putting too much strain on the brain OR wallet.

  1. Winter Terrariums

So cute. These must be terribly difficult to make, right? WRONG. These little terrariums look expensive but cost very little to make.  The simple, kid-friendly directions can be found HERE

2. Snowflakes Made Easy

Snowflakes…more like SQUAREflakes. If you have ever spent any amount of time trying to create beautiful, perfectly round snowflakes you know the frustration. This little graphic makes creating perfect snowflakes easy. The best part? If you drink coffee and own a pair of scissors they will cost you nothing.

Check out this page for some fun kid-approved snowflake cutout designs.

3. Waterless Snow Globes

These adorable little "waterless" snow globes can serve as a both a gift AND holiday décor. Two birds, one globe.  The tutorial is really straight-forward and the supply cost is low—especially if you have leftover materials from creating your terrarium. Directions HERE.

4. Gold Holiday Lights

This project takes a little bit more time, but it’s still ridiculously easy. Bonus: gold and silver spray-paint is affordable and can be used again for a variety of projects in the future. Full project details can be found HERE.

5. Simple Branch Centerpieces

Looking for a unique cost-effective centerpiece? Pour salt (or sand) into glass containers of your choosing, pick some branches off the ground and voila! Instant centerpiece. To add some color you could spray-paint them gold, but I like the simple no-frills approach. Full instructions can be found HERE.

6. Large Snowflakes

These snowflakes are affordable and super simple to assemble. A simple coat of paint allows you to customize each one to match your style. Instructions HERE.
