Saving Big Time With Your Credit Card
My dad is going to hate me for saying this, but I love my credit card. Before you peg me as a shopaholic, know that I’ve never paid a cent in interest and I use them for two reasons only: budgeting and rewards. When used responsibly, credit cards can do some pretty great things for you, like:
Help your credit score. Since a credit card is basically a miniature plastic loan, treat it as such. You’re borrowing against yourself, so when you use it like cash, it’s amazing for your credit score. Even if you don’t use it as cash and carry a modest balance, pay on time and your credit score will love you. Credit cards with a low interest rate (like cards from AECU) are ideal if you carry a balance month to month; it saves you some serious cash in the long-run.
Save you money. Stuck with a big credit card from a large bank? Don’t sweat it. Transfer your balance to a low rate credit card to refinance your credit card debt at a lower interest rate. We know of a pretty sweet credit union who can help you with that.
Get you cash and other free stuff. Last Thanksgiving, our San Diego branch sent us this exciting story about how a member entered the branch with a mailer we sent him about his rewards balance. Unbeknownst to him, his Platinum Visa card earned him some pretty serious swag. He walked out of the branch that day having ordered $600 in Visa Gift Cards. Best. Day. Ever.
