Meet Bob McKay
Bob McKay joined the Together Credit Union Family in 2015, bringing with him more than 20 years in the industry-quite impressive if you ask us! Since 1995, McKay served Chicago-based Baxter Credit Union (BCU) as Executive Vice President/Chief Operating Officer. He’s been involved with many industry-related volunteer positions, including CUNA Lending Council, Member Loyalty Group, and the American Credit Union Mortgage Association.
Enough with all of that. Here’s what you, our members, really need to know about your CEO:
What inspired you to apply for the CEO position here?
McKay: I’ve known several members of the Credit Union’s management team for years and became familiar with the organization through them. I was always impressed with the camaraderie, reputation in the industry and many similarities in our approaches to the business and commitment to serving our members. The chance to join the team and return to St. Louis where I attended Washington University and my wife’s hometown made for an exciting opportunity.
What have you learned on the job so far?
McKay: The credit union has a great team that is committed to our mission of serving our members with the very best in financial service solutions. Of course, every organization has opportunities for improvement, and I’m thrilled our strong culture centered on doing what’s best for our members gives us a strong foundation to continue to build on in the future.
What’s your favorite part of the CU industry?
McKay: Credit unions, for the most part, are committed to doing the right thing for their members and in doing so create real value and better experiences that result in significantly better loyalty compared to other financial service providers. It’s a great feeling to know that what you do matters and provides real help for people across the country.
Which cooperative principle do you identify most with and why?
McKay: I’ve always enjoyed the opportunities to collaborate with other credit union leaders across the country. There have been so many successful ventures across the industry that have allowed us to share resources, invest in new technology or acquire expertise that wouldn’t otherwise be possible on our own. I’m a big believer in leveraging this opportunity to its fullest.
When asked…
St. Louis style pizza OR deep dish?
It took me a while to get used to the orange cheese, but definitely St. Louis style. Deep dish never did it for me-just a lot of cheese and dough.
Stuck on Highway 270 in afternoon rush OR Lake Shore Drive in the morning?
Lake Shore Drive has to be one of the prettiest drives in any city in the country. The city skyline and lakefront provide a spectacular view. It’s easy to get distracted by the view but pay attention to the road, traffic and occasional pothole!
Navy Pier OR St. Louis Arch/Riverfront?
Two great choices here. I’ll have to go with the new hometown and the Arch; a lot of great memories at Laclede’s Landing and all the history of the Arch.
Cardinals OR Cubs?
Wrigley is a great place to watch a game and the Cubs are lovable despite 100+ years of frustration, but I’m very excited to root for a team that actually wins!
